There is never a wrong time for cake, which is maybe why I’m publishing this review almost three months late. (I lie, I’m just lazy.) I’m unapologetic, because what I’m about to share with you is the eighth wonder of the world (well, one of the seven wonders of Bedford*). *Fact unconfirmed: I don’t know Bedford very well. But while I may not know Bedford very well, I know that The Puddin Club, on Castle Road close to the centre of the town, is a pretty damn good place to get a piece of cake!
I went with some colleagues after work one day in the summer, after deciding a few weeks earlier that we deserved a treat, and after a sinful amount of time spent stalking The Puddin Club’s Facebook page to see the cakes they had on offer each day. So on a sunny Friday afternoon, we carted ourselves off to the little café to treat ourselves to some baked goods.
And, my goodness, was there ever a slice of cake as big as the one I was served there?! I ordered the tiramisu cake while my colleague ordered the chocolate marshmallow cake (both chosen in advance after a tactical check of Facebook before turning up), and both were served in huge portions. There was also a classic coffee and walnut cake on offer, as well as some tasty-looking gluten-free muffins, and various other cakey creations.
Not a cake aficionado? The Puddin Club also offers their namesake – pudding! Sticky toffee pudding, apple crumble, cheesecake, roulade…you name the pudding, they’ll probably have it! Not a fan of solid food? They have a large menu of hot drinks, milkshakes and cocktails to whet (and wet) your appetite, as well as the fridges of alcoholic and non-alcoholic chilled drinks, including beer and prosecco. Not particularly fond of sweet food in general? They’ve got you covered – also on the menu are cheese boards (which sound amazing, and if I hadn’t filled up on cake I would have been straight on those).
The Puddin Club is available to hire for private functions, and has a small outside courtyard area for when the weather is fine and you want to enjoy your desserts al fresco. They sometimes put on different food nights, for example the paella night they’re holding in a couple of weeks time, and if you can’t choose between desserts, they have a tasting board on offer every now and again for you to get your fix without having to make that difficult decision! It’s a great place to go if you want a treat but don’t want to break the bank – I ordered without taking notice of the prices, and was really pleasantly surprised when I came to pay and found that my Appletiser drink and great big hunk of cake came to under £5 in total!
So next time you’re in Bedford (are you ever in Bedford? Tell me!) and you fancy some cake, bypass those big chain cafés and coffee shops. The Puddin Club has a much fresher and much larger range of desserts on offer, and you don’t have to spend a fortune! Inexpensive, delicious cake – can you name me anything better than that?
