So I heard you don’t like the cold? Maybe you hate the snow, or the long, dark nights are getting you down? It sounds like you need to escape the northern hemisphere!
While I have never been below the Equator (something I aim to do within the next year!), let alone been away in a hot place for Christmas, I’ve had my thoughts about where I would go to celebrate Christmas without the need for two pairs of socks or new woolly pyjamas.
An obvious choice, Australia seems like a pretty sweet place to spend the holidays! Barbecues on the beach, exploring the many different cities, and the potential of staying until the New Year and being the first on the planet to celebrate the turning of the year! For the same reason, New Zealand is appealing, and somewhere I have wanted to go for a few years now too. Another positive about these countries is that the culture is quite similar to that of the UK, so if you want a ‘normal’ Christmas in every aspect but the weather, then heading down under is what you want to do!
South America also celebrate Christmas at the height of summer, so taking a trip to Chile, Peru, or Argentina could be a good one to think about. Latin America is hugely Christian and have their own traditions surrounding the holiday, so it would be a very interesting time spent there at Christmas and into the New Year as they celebrate Epiphany, or Day of the Kings, on the 6th of January, which is often just as important as, if not more than, Christmas.
Yet another option is going to a country, anywhere, where Christmas is not celebrated in the slightest! Want to escape from all the television adverts, Christmas lights, blatant materialism and overcooked brussel sprouts? Book yourself a couple of weeks away in the Maldives, a majority Muslim country, and sun yourself on the beautiful beaches favoured by honeymooners. Or, if you really hate Christmas that much, consider a trip to little-explored Brunei, also a Muslim country, where it is completely illegal to celebrate Christmas in public!
So if you want the heat and sunshine for Christmas next year (it’s probably a little late for this year now!) then hop on a plane and make sure you’re heading south! Pick your country wisely – if you like Christmas, head southwest for some serious Christian celebrations, and if you’d rather avoid the festive mayhem then head east! There are exceptions of course, and the continent of Africa especially isn’t so clear cut – Christianity and Islam are seemingly equally populous. Do some research before you book, but wherever you go, make sure to leave your Christmas jumpers behind!
